Want a game of golf?
Posted by Mike Price on September 27, 2007 8:37 AM
I am desperate to get back on the golf course before I forget all the tips Dad has shown me. Problem now is dark mornings and early evenings. I am going to have to bite the bullet and book a game at a course. This will increase the pressure.
Hopefully Dad will play and keep me company but if not then I may see if Tony Hall wants to play.
Also my cousin Paul Williams who hails from Wales is playing this weekend in an amateur competition and complained that I never mention him.
Good luck Paul and let me know how you get on.
Hopefully next time I put an entry on, I will have some news.
Any tips or news for the golfing world then send me a comment. Best scores, holes in one, winners and losers, all welcome.
Cheers
Mike
Back and ready to go!

My knee seems to be fine and as soon as I was cleared by the doctor I quickly arranged a game with my Dad. We went to Kirkby golf course and thankfully I had no reaction to playing. My knee seemed to be fine (though it ached the next day, but then so did other parts) and some of the swelling had subsided.
I have been practising with a new grip and it should help me to stabilise the shots I play, I know it will take time to break it in although in the long run I feel this will be worth it.

This time around I think I was subconsciously worried about my knee and for the first nine holes at least I was tentative in my playing. Thankfully Dad eventually stepped in and changed the stance I was using. He got me to line my left foot up with the tee and widen my right foot. It made a huge difference. I even out drove him on one hole and most of my shots from then on soared and went reasonably straight. I managed a 170 yard shot off a 7 iron and that made me happy as I repeated the feat(just to prove it wasn't a fluke). I lost two balls in very bad rough, but managed to find six. My putting eventually improved and for the last four holes I two putted on each,
Dad managed a 78 without his handicap and I managed 102 without my handicap. It may seem a poor score to most people, but to me it is great. It means that I can now continue to play and hopefully improve. I can see where I am going wrong and will endeavour to correct my problems.
Any tips or hints please leave a comment.
cheers

I have had the knee operation and it all seems to have gone well. I had a fraying of the meniscus. The fraying was similar to a tear which is a common knee joint injury. Each knee has two C-shaped menisci (plural of meniscus): a lateral meniscus at the outer side of the knee and a medial meniscus at the inner side of the knee. This rubbery tissue acts as a shock absorber between the upper and lower leg bones and stabilizes the knee joint by evenly distributing the load across the knee. A tear to the meniscus can interfere with how your knee works.
This could explain why I am compensating while I swing and topping quite a lot of my shots. I also have got an Anterior Cruciate Ligament problem which was diagnosed almost 12 years ago. This could need an operation at a later date. Lastly I have severe arthritis (Osteoarthritis) probably caused by post-traumatic arthritis which can develop after an injury to the knee. I injured my knee over 12 years ago whilst playing football. This type of arthritis is similar to osteoarthritis and may develop years after a fracture, ligament injury or meniscus tear.

As you can see I am lucky to be able to walk never mind play golf. I will however return to the golf course within the next 4-6 weeks. I am looking forward to it. I will keep you all upto date on my recovery.
Thanks
Mike
